THE FOREST OF BERCE

Discover the forest starting at Marigné-Laillé

The community of the Communes is a natural gateway into the forest of BERCE- spreading over 5400 hectares and run by the Office National des Forêts.

Renowned for having the most prestigious oak groves in France, the forest remains one of the last vestiges of the huge Gallic forest the Romans used to call "Le Bois des Carnutes".

If you are a nature lover, you will enjoy the quiet and relaxing scenery as well as the numerous walks and bicycle rides. Get the map of the tracks at the tourist information centre and enjoy.

Then, who knows, on a path, around the bend, you might catch sight of wild animals, such as stags, which are in abundance in the area.

ARBORETUM
Top page
An educational stroll at Laigné-en-Belin...

The arboretum des Quintes has several hundred species of trees and small shrubs spread over more than five hectares : oaks, chestnut trees, fruit trees,...

Adding to the afforestration in the northern part (over 7000 oaks and 800 chestnut trees were planted in 1992), is an arboretum with species from the Sarthe in the southern part. Spreading over more than one hectare, micro landscapes of the Sarthe (hedges, paths, orchards) have been recreated. Every tree and shrub is identified by a tag highlighting its educational value.

Coming from Mulsanne (towards Ecommoy) along the A 123, before the first roundabout, you can park along the site and enjoy a nice discovery walk with the family.

ARCHTECTURAL HERITAGE

Castles and chapels

Most of the historical monuments of the community of Communes are private. Only one out of 12 castles or safe houses may be visited : the Château of Ronceray at Marigné-Laillé. The Château of Mondanat Guécélard is now a gîte with B&B and the Château of Rancher has been fitted out as a nursing home.

However, many of the castles can be seen from the roads and paths, which allows you to admire some 20 historical sites dating from the Middle-Ages or the Gallic-Roman period.

A few restored chapels and washing places add a unique touch to your visit. Moreover, the interesting religious buildings have a collection of stained-glass windows, statues and other genuine paintings.

Hemp ovens

In the Belinois area and along the community hiking path, you are still able to admire a few hemp ovens.

However, most of these ovens are located in the commune of Laigné-en-Belin, where nine remain, while St Gervais has just one and Teloché three.

There are no other hemp ovens visible in the area. In fact, the ones that were left collapsed as time passed by.
